I will be a warrior
along the river in the sun.
Paying attention to all the signs:
animal and human around me.
Tracking what I need to know,
sleeping deep and dreamless;
conserving my energy.
I will be a warrior
on the road.
Singing so I'll stay awake,
hearing all the words:
spoken and unspoken,
knowing what is being said
behind them,
and where the knives are hidden.
I will be a warrior
with my body.
Hands as blade edges,
feet powerful and sure.
I will be a warrior
in mind and spirit,
my judgement unclouded,
my chants strong and true.
