Thanks for the follow-up, James. I’m always happy to hear when I pass on something and someone else takes a cool thing that they can use or get in the hands of someone who will truly appreciate the item (which I wouldn’t have been able to do with that footlocker.)

If you have a chance, and are interested, please keep us up to date as to whether or not you sold it to the US Naval Museum. How great would that be?!

Dear Peter, Very nice website you have and a well written and accurate article on estate sales. I must Thank You, and all others, who smelled the moth balls, but passed by the old navy Footlocker . I did, then I realized Constrn. Btn. Was a SeaBee Footlocker , that registered to me as a Militaria collector, among other things. It was at $75, late in the day and I offered $65 for it. They sold it to me, and I felt it was rare, had no idea of the value, as SeaBee items are rare!! The personal touches, his wife’s picture and rail tag from Naval Hospital GreatLakesIll. The USNaval Museum saw my pic, and there is only one other in their control, they want to buy it for the SeaBeeMuseum in Ca. Will see their $ offer. It’s the perfect home for the Sailors Locker!! Somewhere I still have some Northwest flatware that I bought at an “antique” [read: "junk"] shop. Northwest Orient Airlines sounded incredibly glamorous to me as a kid, and I still get a little thrill when I see the old logo.

There are so many things I took for granted about air travel that no longer happen. Smoking. Eating lunch. Getting seduced by beautiful stewardesses. It’s a lost world, all right.

I paid $3 at that warehouse sale for a pile of airline silverware. Northwest, JAL, SAS, Korean Air, Thai, Lufthansa, SwissAir and Cathay Pacific. I like to be reminded of an era where people on planes were trusted with metal flatware.

And think of how many miles this stuff has traveled. Or, as Stephanie suggested, how many mouths they’ve been in.
